What is Google AI Bard?
Google’s Bard is built on a condensed version of the Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA). This was trained on a dataset called Infiniset. Infiniset contains:
- Public dialogue and
- web text, including C4-based data,
- English Wikipedia,
- code documents,
- web documents, non-English web documents, and
- dialogues data from public forums

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, revealed in a blog post on February 6 that their generational AI, which is similar to ChatGPT, would soon be integrated into Google’s search engine. Google Bard was pre-trained on 1.56 trillion words of “public dialogue data and web text,” is based on Google’s Linguistic Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA), and was trained on internet-based datasets.
Shortly after Google announced Bard, Microsoft announced its own AI-driven enhancement to its Bing search engine, claiming that it is more sophisticated than OpenAI’s previously popular ChatGPT programe.
Google AI Bard is not a standalone tool or application that is available for public use. Instead, it is a research project that is intended to advance our understanding of the relationship between AI and creativity. The ultimate goal is to develop AI systems that can produce original creative works that are comparable in quality to those created by human writers.
How Does it Work?
Bard is a conversational chatbot AI, much like other chatbot AIs. This means that users engage with it by entering a question or request into a text box, and the AI—in this example, Google Bard—then generates a response in the form of a conversation.
Bard uses LaMDA, a Language Model for Dialogue Applications, to better understand the request/question while applying context. Bard then uses the internet to gather a variety of information in order to formulate an answer. This is then converted into a conversational response, similar to one you would have with a human.
What is LaMDA?
LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications), Google’s language model built on Transformer, a neural network architecture that is the foundation of several generative AI applications seen today, and, surprisingly, ChatGPT’s GPT-3 language model, are at the heart of Google Bard.
Google Bard has been released with a lightweight model version of LaMDA that uses significantly less computing power, allowing scalability to more users and gaining more feedback, which will be combined with Google’s own internal testing.
LaMDA is a statistical method that predicts the next words in a series based on the previous ones. Its uniqueness stems from its ability to stimulate dialogue in a looser manner than task-based responses typically allow. This allows the conversation to jump from one topic to the next. It employs ideas such as multimodal user intent, reinforcement learning, and suggestions.
How to use Google Bard AI?
To be able to use Google Bard, one must be chosen from a group of beta testers. If you choose, open the Google app on your smart device, tap the chatbot icon, and enter your prompt or request.
This is where the conversation begins, and you can begin asking questions or making requests. Unfortunately, Google is no longer accepting applications for Beta Testing positions.
Google Bard AI features
Although chatbots cannot hold conversations in the same way that humans can, they frequently appear to do so by generating a wide range of digital text that can be repurposed in nearly any context. Google’s chatbot strives for this with almost any topic thrown at it:
- Attempting to demonstrate the combination of strength, intelligence, and creativity.
- Obtaining data from user responses and the internet
- For preliminary testing, a lite model version of the LaMDA is being used.
- Obtaining feedback in order to improve the AI system in the future
Google Bard AI use cases and examples
It has several potential use cases that can help to simplify life and fill knowledge gaps, the most obvious of which are:
- Providing appropriate responses to queries through its sophisticated AI algorithms
- Using the well-known Google search engine to find information.
- Google AI-powered task automation that is more advanced and improved.
- Personal AI assistance, particularly for activities such as time management and scheduling.
- Serving as a social hub and facilitating user conversations in a variety of contexts
Google has a long history of using AI to improve search for billions of people, and their most recent AI technologies are expanding on this and developing entirely new ways to interact with information, whether it’s language, images, video, or audio.
Google Bard AI has some limitations.
Chatbots and conversational AI have revolutionized the way computer software is built, used, and maintained. They plan to redesign search engines, digital assistants, and email programmers. Despite its immense potential, the technology is not without flaws.
Chatbots have a long way to go before they can distinguish between fact and fiction and avoid biased responses because they learn from the vast amounts of information available on the internet.
The most recent instance of Google Bard’s blunder was captured in the form of a factual error in its very first demo. Google shared a GIF of one of Bard’s responses to a question that contained incorrect information. The GIF displayed the query –
“Can I tell my 9-year-old about any new discoveries made by the James Webb Space Telescope?”
…with the response that it captured the first images of a planet outside of our solar system. Many astronomers on Twitter, however, pointed out that this is incorrect, as the first image of an exoplanet was taken in 2004.
This error highlights the most significant limitation of AI chatbots and the importance of a thorough testing process. To keep up with the steep competition that ChatGPT has introduced to their relatively untouched ecosphere, Google is making an effort to improve Bard’s responses and meet a high bar for quality in real-world information.
What can we do with it?
We don’t know everything Bard is capable of right now. However, Google has provided us with a few examples:
- Plan a baby shower for a friend.
- Contrast two Oscar-nominated films.
- Find lunch ideas based on what’s in your refrigerator.
This means it lacks some of the capabilities that ChatGPT has, such as the ability to write research papers, poems, or code for a basic website, though there are a couple of caveats. First and foremost, Google has not stated everything Bard can and cannot do. Second, because Bard appears to be designed to supplement Google Search, Google may simply not have it set up for functions that do not directly provide better, more contextual search results.
Who can use it?
Only “trusted testers” can use Bard AI at the moment. So, if you haven’t received an invite from Google, you’re probably stuck waiting along with the rest of us.
But there is some good news. Google says that AI-powered features will be added to Google Search soon, so hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to put Google Bard to the test. Google also announced AI-based features for Maps and Lens at the February 8 Paris event.
Is it free?
At the moment, it appears that Bard will be free for the time being, though Google has yet to confirm this. Given that Google does not charge for Google Search, it would be surprising for Google to charge for the consumer-facing version (i.e. a version intended for everyday users) of Bard but given that ChatGPT Plus exists as a subscription service from Open AI-backed Microsoft, anything is possible.
